Harborough Town lost ground to Spalding United in the title race after being held to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to fellow promotion challengers Real Bedford.
With first hosting third at the Beehive, the contest had a big fight feel about it. The atmosphere reflected the importance of the occasion, with Harborough’s Spanish supporters in attendance and in fine voice throughout. La Media Inglesa brought 60 fans with them, joining 800 local Bees in a bumper crowd.
Both sides showed early attacking intent. Ben Stephens combined well with Terrell Pennant, however, his attempt lacked conviction as Craig King gathered easily, while at the other end, Ben Stevens spotted Elliot Taylor off his line and attempted an audacious strike from the halfway line that landed on the roof of the net.
Harborough continued trying to unpick the Bedford lock, coming closest when George Carline laid the ball off for Adil Nabi, on the edge of the box, who made a delicate dink into a dangerous area, for Danny Newton to use his strength, outmuscle his marker, rise highest and head towards goal. Newton came agonisingly close to putting his side ahead as the ball flew through the air in slow-motion, cannoning back off the upright.
The Pirates continued to threaten on the counter with their swashbuckling brand of football, passing the ball around quickly and turning possession into breakaways in a flash. Shaheim Ward slalomed past several Harborough players before forcing a save from Taylor, while Archie Jones later fired wide after dispossessing Nabi in midfield. Josh Allen will have been disappointed with his final ball as the forward broke through the Harborough press, powered forward, and with Stevens in acres of space on the right, Allen massively overhit the pass, which would have left his fellow attacker one on one with Taylor with space and time on his side.
The visitors broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Josh Setchell made a galloping run down the right following a mix up from a Harborough throw in, before squaring for Stevens, who fired a snapshot past Taylor at the near post to put Bedford ahead. Despite being sloppy in possession at times, the Bees refused to be beaten, as they pushed for an equaliser. Stephens saw a powerful effort parried away by King before Newton guided the ball narrowly wide after being played through by Nabi.
Bees manager Mitch Austin made an inspired substitution in the 67th minute, introducing Riley O’Sullivan and his wand of a left foot from the bench. With his first touch, Harborough’s top scorer demonstrated his indispensability, receiving the ball with his back to goal, turning with purpose and firing a fierce left-footed strike into the back of the net to level the game. Coming on at the same time as O’Sullivan to make his debut was former AFC Wimbledon winger Ryan Mclean.
Both sides had chances to snatch the winner in the closing stages. Real Bedford looked certain to win a penalty when Allen appeared to be brought down inside the box following a last-ditch challenge from Liam Dolman, but the referee evidently saw nothing in it, much to the relief of the local and Spanish Bees alike. You could hear the sound of a pin drop, instantly followed by loud cheers and chants from the Spanish Bees of ‘Iniesta, Iniesta, Iniesta’.
If the Pirates felt hard done by, then the home fans would have felt equally aggrieved when, moments later, defender Drew Richardson was shown a yellow card for a handball outside the box. Earlier in the game, Richardson had made a crunching two-footed tackle, worthy of a red but at the very least a yellow. The Real Bedford man was lucky to stay on the pitch, as Los Bees chanted ‘corrupcion en la federacion’.
Moments later, Allen went even closer, getting on the end of a dangerous Josh Setchell cross, only for Taylor to react sharply and deny him. At the other end, deep in stoppage time, substitute Paul Malone, making his 150th Bees appearance, headed over from an O’Sullivan delivery. With the visitors continuing to throw bodies forward, the hosts were forced to defend resolutely, with Dolman and Rory McAuley producing a pair of vital headed clearances to preserve a hard-earned point.
After the game, Mitch Austin praised his side’s character, saying, “I’m happy with the reaction from the lads, they showed great character.” However, the Bees’ boss conceded it was “a good point for both sides”, as he admitted Real Bedford are a “great side who move the ball quickly.”
With Spalding United making a late comeback at home to Halesowen, both the Bees and the Tulips sit on 76 points with nine and seven games left to play, respectively. Austin’s men will be looking to take advantage of those two games in hand with Tuesday night trips to Bromsgrove Sporting and Real Bedford, either side of next Saturday’s away game at Alvechurch. Three huge games on the road that could have a massive sway in the title race. The Bees will be back in action at the Beehive on the 28th when they host Bury Town.
