Harborough Town Spencers (7) – (0) Glen Villa Reserves

Report – Tony Sansome
Man of the Match – Reece Mutebi

Harborough Town Spencers approached this must-win local derby determined to respond after two disappointing defeats. Against familiar rivals Glen Villa Reserves, the message was clear — put in a performance and get back to winning ways.

The hosts started brightly and immediately took control of proceedings, moving the ball sharply and creating chances. However, they were repeatedly denied by an inspired opposition goalkeeper, Lewis Doyle, who produced save after save to frustrate the early pressure. Despite dominating possession and territory, Spencers had to remain patient.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 33 minutes. After some excellent approach play from Sam Aldridge, the ball broke invitingly for Isaac Carter, who produced an unstoppable volley that swerved away from Doyle’s outstretched hand and into the net. It was no more than the hosts deserved, though the half ended 1–0.

With the wind in their favour after the interval, Spencers elevated their tempo and passing game, which began to take its toll on tiring legs. They came out for the second half like an express train. Joe Brown’s forward pass picked out Reece Mutebi, who did the rest himself — beating a couple of defenders before coolly slotting home.

Within twenty minutes the lead had ballooned. Two almost identical assists from Cam Dunbar on the left provided the platform, first for a precise Aldridge finish and then for Mutebi to fire home again, before Aldridge added another effort beyond the keeper’s reach.

With the result effectively secured, five substitutions were introduced. One of those, Leo Murton, saw a shot blocked, only for Mutebi to follow up and complete his first hat-trick in adult football — his twelfth goal of the season, matching Aldridge’s tally.

The scoring was rounded off by substitute Kieran Perkins, whose strike from outside the area beat Doyle despite getting a hand to it.

A really strong team performance capped by a pleasing clean sheet for Joey Chapman. Several players could have claimed Man of the Match honours, but hat-trick hero Mutebi just edged out Dunbar.

Best wishes to Glen Villa for the remainder of the season.

Attention now turns to a tough away trip to Ambleside Pavilion, who remain unbeaten all season — a formidable challenge, but one Spencers will approach with renewed confidence.
