Harborough Town Imperials kicked off their League Cup campaign on Sunday with an away trip to face a strong Leicester United side — and after an entertaining contest, they emerged victorious following a dramatic penalty shootout.
The game began at a lively pace, with both sides showing plenty of attacking intent. Harborough settled well, moving the ball confidently and creating a number of early openings. Their persistence paid off when Violet Angus broke the deadlock, finishing smartly to give the Imperials a well-deserved lead.
Leicester United fought back, however, and managed to level the score before half-time. The second half followed a similar pattern, with momentum swinging from end to end. Georgi Holdsworth restored Harborough’s advantage with a composed finish, only for the hosts to respond again, making it 2–2 as full-time approached.
With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the tie went to penalties. The Imperials held their nerve from the spot, converting four of their kicks to edge out Leicester United 4–3 in the shootout and secure a place in the next round of the competition.
It was a hard-fought and determined team performance, showing great character and togetherness throughout. A fantastic result on the road that sees the Imperials continue their League Cup journey.
