Harborough Town returned to league action on Remembrance weekend, edging out Alvechurch 1–0 at the Beehive to move back to the top of the Southern League Premier Central table.

Before kick-off, an impeccably observed minute’s silence paid tribute to all who gave their lives for their country. On the pitch, both sides began cautiously on a crisp autumn afternoon in Leicestershire, with little to separate them in the opening exchanges.

Manager Mitch Austin made one change from last weekend’s squad, with Rob Morgan handed his first start since pre-season following Josh Walsh’s injury. Morgan, fresh from scoring off the bench last time out, added energy in midfield as the Bees looked to impose themselves.

Elliott Taylor was called into action early, producing a vital touch to deny Kieran Wakefield, before Alvechurch’s Szhem Whyte-Hall headed narrowly wide from a right-wing cross. At the other end, Danny Newton and Dempsey Arlott-John linked well on several occasions, while Luis Rose’s trickery caused further problems for the visitors’ back line.

Despite enjoying the better of possession, Harborough couldn’t find a breakthrough before the interval, and the sides went in level at 0–0 after an even first half.

After the restart, Alvechurch grew into the contest and twice went close through Whyte-Hall, only to be denied by the outstanding Taylor, who produced two superb saves in quick succession. The Bees responded with attacking changes — Ben Stephens and Brady Hickey introduced to freshen up the forward line — and momentum began to shift back in Harborough’s favour.

The decisive moment arrived on 80 minutes. A long throw from George Carline caused chaos inside the Alvechurch box, and after two fine saves from Evans, Alex Morris reacted quickest to fire home from ten yards and give the Bees the lead. Moments later, Luis Rose went close to doubling the advantage, his curling effort clipping the post with the keeper beaten.

There was still time for one last Alvechurch opportunity, but Man of the Match Taylor stood firm once again, preserving another clean sheet and ensuring all three points stayed at the Beehive.

With Spalding slipping up elsewhere, Harborough’s victory sends them back to the top of the table — with two games in hand — as their impressive start to the season continues.
