Harborough Town Spencers (2) – (0) Loughborough Dynamo Reserves
Report – Tony Sansome
Man of the Match – George Tong
This was a battle royale between two of the top sides in the division, with both teams knowing the importance of the points on offer. Although the goals came at the very beginning and the very end of the game, plenty happened between those moments in what proved to be a competitive and hard-fought contest.
Harborough made the perfect start and opened the scoring early in the match through a well-worked move. Joe Brown and Chinonso Emekekwue competed strongly in midfield to win possession, before Emekekwue switched the play wide to Witkowski. The winger took on his full-back with confidence before delivering an inch-perfect cross across the area to Sam Aldridge at the back post, who made no mistake in tapping the ball home.
For the first fifteen minutes it was largely Spencer’s who controlled proceedings. They created several promising opportunities but were unable to add to their lead, partly due to a fabulous performance by the visiting goalkeeper who produced a series of impressive saves to keep his side in the contest.
Gradually Loughborough Dynamo began to grow into the game and started to gain the upper hand in possession. There were moments where Harborough had to hang on, but the defensive unit stood firm and defended well. The hosts suffered an early setback when Fahid Hamidou was forced to leave the field after pulling his hamstring. However, Ben Brown entered the game and produced a superb performance covering at left-back.
As the second half began, Loughborough continued to apply pressure and Harborough endured a spell where they struggled to clear their lines. At times it looked as though the visitors would equalise at any moment. The Spencer’s bench responded well by using their substitutes wisely to inject fresh legs into the side.
Harborough were also helped by an excellent moment of goalkeeping from Avwerosuo Emekeme, who made a great save when a Dynamo striker broke through one-on-one, spreading himself well to deny what looked like a certain goal.
Following that moment, Harborough seemed to get their second wind and began to look dangerous again, particularly when they were able to deliver quality balls out to their wide players. Reece Mutebi forced another fine save from the visiting goalkeeper as the home side looked to put the game beyond doubt.
The decisive second goal finally arrived in the final minute of the ninety. Sam Aldridge produced a great run before squaring the ball to substitute Sesay Saidu whose initial effort was blocked. However, another substitute was perfectly placed to follow up and Kieran Perkins made no mistake to seal the victory.
It was a team performance in every sense of the word, with players contributing across the pitch.
However, the Man of the Match award went to George Tong, who was a colossus at right-back throughout the game.
Having beaten third-placed Loughborough Dynamo Reserves, Harborough now turn their attention to another huge fixture next week when they face second-placed Rogue Elite in what promises to be another tough encounter.
