FA Cup football makes its return to the Beehive on Saturday as the Bees take on Spennymoor Town FC in the Fourth Round Qualifying. This will be the first competitive fixture between the sides, so both sets of players will want to make an impression.
This meeting carries the hallmarks of a captivating affair and a demanding test for both sides, backed up by manager Mitch Austin following last weekend’s win over Southport. He said: “It was really important that we got loads of positives out of today going into next week and I think we have done exactly what we needed to do. Let the best team win.”
Spennymoor Town were formed in 2005 after Spennymoor United folded, and ever since they have worked their way up the leagues. They were promoted to the National League North via the play-offs in 2017 and have plied their trade there ever since. They have also tasted cup success, winning the FA Vase in the 2012/13 season. The Moors made it to the First Round Proper last season and will be hoping to repeat this feat this campaign.
Manager Peter Hartley took charge in September. Hartley played for teams such as Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers and Jamshedpur. Since moving into coaching, he worked in the academies of Middlesborough and Sunderland before joining St Mirren in 2024 as a first team coach, with the side recording three consecutive top six finishes in the Scottish Premiership and winning the Premier Sports Cup in the 2025/26 season, beating Celtic in the final at Hampden Park.
The Moors haven’t had the start to the season that they would’ve hoped for, currently finding themselves bottom of the National League North with seven points, not recording a league win since the 15th of August. The FA Cup has proved a welcome distraction this season, comfortably winning both rounds they have participated in, starting with a 4-0 win at Emley AFC, and in the previous round they beat fellow National League North side Chester at home 4-1.
Harborough will need to keep a close watch on several key threats throughout the game. One of these is Danny Johnson, who has six goals this season, three of these in the previous round. Another threat is Glen Taylor, who has scored five goals this season. Joining the club in 2015, Taylor has now made over 450 appearances for The Moors. At the other end of the pitch is 32-year-old goalkeeper Matt Urwin, who signed for The Moors this summer after spending nine years at Chorley, where he made over 300 appearances. This is an experienced side that will certainly prove to be a test, and no one in yellow will be underestimating them.
Harborough will be hoping to build on recent home performances, which saw a 3-2 win over St Albans City in the previous round and last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Southport. Dempsey Arlott-John will be hoping to build on the dramatic hat-trick that he scored in the previous round of the competition.
