Attention turns back to Enterprise National League North football as Harborough welcomes Southport FC to the Beehive on Saturday afternoon. This will be the first competitive meeting between the sides, so both sets of players will want to make an impression.

Southport are a historic club that were founded in 1888 and spent 57 years in the Football League between 1921 and 1978. The Sandgrounders reached the quarter-final of the FA Cup in the 1930/31 season before losing 9-1 against Everton, this being their best run in the competition. More recently, this is the Sandgrounders’ tenth consecutive season competing in the National League North after being relegated from the National League in 2017.

Manager Mark Duffy was appointed permanent manager on October 1st after previously acting as caretaker manager following Neil Danns’ departure after seven matches this season. Having served as assistant manager at the club since his arrival in 2025, Duffy certainly knows the club. As a former Sandgrounder himself, Duffy signed for the club in 2007 and made 103 appearances, scoring 19 goals in that time before earning a move into the Football League with Morecambe in 2009. Duffy does have previous management experience, as he managed Warrington Rylands in 2024 before returning to Southport as assistant manager. Southport haven’t started the season how they would’ve hoped, winning just two and drawing three of their opening ten games this campaign, and find themselves in 20th place with nine points. Of these nine points, just one has come away from home, that being in a 2-2 draw away at Hednesford in August.

There are several players Harborough will have to monitor closely throughout the game, one of these being top goalscorer Adam Moseley, who has four goals in six competitive appearances since joining the club. The 21-year-old joined the club on loan from League One side Wigan Athletic this summer. Joining him in attack is the experienced Rhys Healey. The 31-year-old has played for many clubs across his career, including Toulouse, where he made 69 appearances across three seasons, scoring 37 goals, and most recently made 20 appearances for Huddersfield Town before signing for the Sandgrounders last month. At the other end of the pitch, defender Max Davies has made 11 appearances this season since joining on loan from Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the summer. The 19-year-old was previously a regular for Blackburn’s Under-21 side and got his first taste of first-team football at Warrington Rylands in 2024 and has now made the step up to the National League North with the Sandgrounders. A side full of experience mixed with youth that will certainly prove to be a test, and no one in yellow will be underestimating them.

Harborough will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the league, having not won in the league in the last four fixtures. However, the Bees will be fuelled by the form in the FA Cup that saw them beat Rushall Olympic 1-0 and, last Saturday, beat St Albans City 3-2 in dramatic style, courtesy of Dempsey Arlott-John’s perfect hat-trick late in the game.

Dempsey Arlott-John will be hoping to build on his performance from last week, where he got his first goals this season, and add more to his tally against Southport at the Beehive on Saturday afternoon.
