Ben Williams led by example as the Harborough Town captain headed the winner to send his side through to the First Round Proper of the FA Trophy at Biggleswade’s expense.

The Bees had the chance to open the scoring early in the first half, but Dan Green’s diving save kept out Rhys Hoenes’ curled effort on goal, while Kai Tonge’s chipped attempt after being played through flew safely over the bar from the visitors’ point of view.

Biggleswade had their own chances to break the deadlock, with Daniel Bond hitting the top corner with his strike, only for his celebrations to be halted due to his foul on Williams in the build-up.

With the score-line level at the break, the hosts got out of the traps early as Amar Sandhu beat Green to a ball over the top and marked his debut with a headed goal in the 50th minute despite the best efforts of the Biggleswade defence to clear off the line.

The visitors’ urgency grew, and they would reply within ten minutes as Dan Akubuine swept home a volley into the centre of the goal following a corner.

Harborough pressed high in response, and after recycling possession, Hoenes crossed the ball to Williams who guided his header into the top corner with 68 minutes on the clock to ensure that his side would be playing in the First Round Proper at the end of the month.

Harborough Town 2 (0)
Sandhu (50) Williams (68)
Biggleswade 1 (0)
