Enterprise National League North football returns to the Beehive on Saturday as we welcome Worksop Town.
There has been one previous competitive fixture between the two sides, which took place last season in the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying at the Beehive and saw the Bees come back from behind to win 3-2.
The Tigers were founded in 1861 and won their first Midland League title in 1921. More recently, in the 2024/25 season, they finished second in the NPL Premier Division before winning the playoffs to secure promotion and return to the National League North for the first time since 2007. They then recorded a 16th-place finish last season.
Manager Craig Parry was appointed in May 2020 and won the Hallamshire Senior Cup in his first full season. Parry has also guided the Tigers to two promotions in his time at the club. Parry was a goalkeeper in his playing career and made appearances for clubs such as Barnsley, Halifax Town and Pontefract Collieries, where he later became manager, guiding the Colls to back-to-back promotions to the NPL South East.
Worksop have had an inconsistent start to the season, winning five, drawing one and losing six of their opening twelve fixtures, and currently find themselves in 13th place with 16 points to their name. Most recently, they played out a 2-2 draw away at Buxton, but this would have come with frustration after they found themselves two goals up after ten minutes but didn’t come away with all three points.
There are several players that Harborough will have to monitor closely throughout the match, one of these being top goalscorer Vaughan Redford. The 28-year-old attacker has scored four league goals this season and is no stranger to his manager, having previously worked under him at Pontefract Collieries. He has also racked up 50 goals in more than 200 appearances for the Tigers and was appointed vice-captain ahead of the current campaign.
Joining him in attack is the experienced Mason Bennett. The 30-year-old has recently joined the Tigers on a one-month loan from National League side Harrogate Town. The attacker hasn’t taken long to settle in, scoring on his only appearance so far in their 2-2 draw away at Buxton. At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Max Dearnley has started all 12 league games this season. The 6’5” shot-stopper has kept two clean sheets so far this campaign, but he has proven his credentials at this level, helping Macclesfield to a fourth-place finish last season. A side full of experience that will certainly prove to be a test, and no one in yellow will be underestimating them.
Harborough will be hoping to build on recent form, which has seen them win their last three fixtures, which were the 3-2 FA Cup win over St Albans, 1-0 league victory against Southport and most recently last weekend’s 3-1 win over Spennymoor Town. All three of these games were at the Beehive. Throughout this season so far, the Bees have only lost one game at home, and there is no doubt this is partly thanks to the tremendous amount of support. So, let’s keep this up and help the lads to make it four in a row on Saturday.
Attackers Britt Assombalonga and Dempsey Arlott-John both have four competitive goals for the Bees so far this season, closely followed by Riley O’Sullivan with three. All three will be hoping to add to their tallies against the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
